BMW introduced the Mini Hatch in late 2000, being the first model released under the Mini marque. The John Cooper Works Mini Cooper S (R53) is the last variant to be produced using the supercharged Tritec engine before the company switched to a different engine and style. This vehicle in particular is supercharged, and features a distinctive functional scoop cut into the hood. The John Cooper Works package includes upgraded engine tuning, upgraded brakes, sportier exhaust, upgraded suspension, and a 6 speed manual transmission. The JCW tuning kit increased the horsepower on the 1.6 L supercharged engine from 162 to 210 horsepower. The clutch on this vehicle is very easy to use and solid, and the shifter produces precise throws to back the higher powered engine. This supercharged example features twin John Cooper Works exclusive exhausts that exit under the center of the rear bumper to give the car a much better sound than the Mini Cooper S.
