Lincoln is reaching into a lot of its heritage these days, which is reminding us all of some great cars. Arguably there's no better one than the Continental four-door convertible. And in the case of this 1963 model, everything represents the luxury icon nicely, right down to its elegant color combination.
It was quite a daring feat to put four doors on a convertible, and especially so with those rear-hinged suicide doors. What's amazing is that the designers wrapped this bold idea in a modern 1960s design that showed restraint from being too outrageous with sheetmetal. That's how an elegant icon was born. The slab sides give way to chrome accent lines that run the length of the car. The rest of the brightwork is nearly as important to keeping this convertible complete, which makes having those big bumpers, delicate trim, and intricate grille so essential. While you'll love to have the top down, the white convertible top adds to the refined tone that really fits a classic Continental.
Open any one of the iconic suicide doors, and you're greeted to an amazing-looking light interior. Just like the roof, the interior is a deeper tone that still coordinates with an overall light color theme. The result is the kind of thoughtful look you might see on a classic European machine. The dash is a beautifully intricate design, and it's complete, right down to the AM/FM radio that's still on display. Even the details are nice, like the working courtesy lights and power antenna. A premium Lincoln means plenty of features. This includes a power front seat, power locks, and fold-down armrests in both rows. Power windows and a power convertible top combine so that you never have to leave the driver's seat to go from enclosed luxury to fully open to the world.
The sporty forward tilt hood gives a great view of the large 430 cubic-inch MEL V8. This is the correct motor for the era, and it's believed to be original to the car. There's plenty of power, and the exhaust even lets out a muscular howl when you really want to get moving. But this Lincoln will never betray its easy-going luxurious nature. The three-speed automatic transmission makes for a fantastic highway cruiser. The suspension soaks up bumps and the ride is effortlessly smooth. Power brakes and power steering make this a true go-anywhere luxury driving machine.
Complete with the factory owner's manual, this Continental is a model of true Lincoln elegance. So, when something this desirable is also so obtainable, you know you want to hurry up and call today!
