This fine example of a 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SE was produced during a short 5-year period from 1967-1972, resulting in a limited amount of these cars ever produced. The 280 SE is a rear-wheel-drive Paul Bracq designed saloon (sedan) automobile with a front positioned engine from Mercedes-Benz. It's powered courtesy of a naturally aspirated 2.8 liter inline 6-cylinder engine. This unit features single overhead camshaft valve gear, 6-cylinder layout, and 2 valves per cylinder. It produces 158 whp of power at 5500 rpm, and maximum torque of 177 lb/ft at 4250 rpm. The engine powers the wheels by means of a 4-speed manual transmission that is located on the steering column. It weighs a quoted 1525 kg, and is claimed to attain a top speed of 118 mph. This particular example comes with a beautiful “white gray” exterior paint in color code #158 and a welcoming dark green interior. The bench seats in the front and rear allow for multiple passengers to ride in the 280SE, which can hold 6 people comfortably. Sitting behind the steering wheel of this car is an experience in itself, and the ambiance of the interior provides a calm and luxurious environment. The green leather complimented by the woodgrain dash and white steering wheel creates a majestic feeling when gliding down the road with the power of the 2.8 liter inline 6-cylinder engine. The proper clunk of the door when shut, oversized steering wheel, comfortable green leather seats and simplistic yet elegant dashboard are just a few of the attributes that makes this classic Mercedes-Benz so sought after. Once you hear the evident but gentle purr of the 2.8 liter inline 6-cylinder engine after turning the key, you know you are in a well-built piece of German engineering that is built to last. When floating down the road in this 280SE, looking through the windshield at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz emblem leading the car can almost feel ambassadorial. There is a certain feeling that comes with driving a classic Mercedes-Benz that I have yet to find the words to describe. No matter where you drive this car, the experience is always remarkable with plenty of people stopping and looking at your piece of rolling history. Getting a thumbs up or putting a smile on a pedestrian's face just by driving is a part of the ownership of such a beautiful car. In a world where it seems as time is doing the opposite of slowing down, hopping in a 54 year old piece of history gives the feeling of being back in the late 1960s for you and those who get the privilege of seeing the Mercedes-Benz 280SE on the road.
